About Coaching
American women have been struggling to lose weight for the past five decades. And what do we have to show for it? Are we all thin, happy and healthy?
Hardly!
In the dieting world, you look to a diet, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, or any of the other ‘experts’ to tell you what to do – how much to eat, what to eat, when to eat, how much to move, etc. You’ve probably tried one or all these methods in your attempts to lose weight, but here you are, still looking for an answer. That’s because 95% of all diet and exercise plans end in failure – meaning that any weight actually lost, is found again within a couple of years.
Not only are attempts to lose weight usually unsuccessful – they are actually damaging. For the vast majority of people, long-term dieting results in
- weight gain
- stress, guilt and anxiety around food
- emotional and/or binge eating
- lost awareness of the body’s hunger and satiety messages
- weight cycling (losing and regaining) which has been shown to be unhealthy.
One of the reasons that our current way of dealing with weight has been so frustratingly ineffective is that it is built on the 5Ds – Disapproval, Distrust, Deprivation, Drudgery and Disappointment! No one can thrive in such an environment.
You may be thinking that you are not on a diet and so this message doesn’t apply to you. Unfortunately, our culture is so diet focused that most American women exhibit damaging diet behavior – even those who claim that they never diet!

You were born with the innate ability to know when you are hungry and when you are satisfied. A small child does not eat when she is not hungry, she does not eat emotionally, and you never have to encourage her to get up and move!! Very young children are totally at ease in their bodies. They haven’t yet been convinced that their bodies are somehow flawed or not acceptable. They haven’t begun to doubt themselves or their body’s miraculous ability to take care of itself. Very young children are natural Intuitive Eaters.
Health at Every Size is the philosophy that health and wellness, rather than weight-loss, should be our focus. When we nourish and nurture the body, mind, and spirit, weight will take care of itself.
You can reclaim this powerful inner wisdom. You can re-learn how to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are satisfied. You can deal with your emotions in ways more effective than eating. You can enjoy going out to play again. You can remember that your body is a miraculous creation, worthy of nurture and respect. There is a Genuine You that is waiting for its chance to emerge, to lead you to your most authentic life. As your coach, my job is to introduce you to that Genuine You.
How does coaching work? One-on-one coaching is a powerful process that allows you to discover your own wisdom and answers.
- Coaching is done over the telephone so location is never an issue. You simply dial in at your appointed time.
- YOU control the agenda. You determine the most important topics to discuss.
- My job as your coach is to be your biggest supporter. I never swerve in my belief that you can accomplish the things you want to accomplish. I uncover your unique skills, values, and past successes and remind you of those and how they can help you reach the goals you’re wanting to reach now.
- I ask empowering questions, make observations and provide information. I never give advice because that undermines your own wisdom and answers.
- I have a large tool-box full of coaching tools that I can employ when appropriate (and with your permission) to create a powerful shift or an “AHA” moment in an area where you may be feeling stuck.
- I help you decide on a plan of action and hold you accountable. Each session will end with you creating one or more “next steps” – things that you will do before our next call that will bring you closer to your goals. Each session begins with accountability. This accountability is never punitive. It is always curious – “What happened when you took your next steps?” “What stopped you from taking your next steps?” “What can you learn from this experience?”
- A coach is your professional ally.
